Why it happens
A standard suspended ceiling tile absorbs surprisingly little — it is chosen for cost and services access, not acoustics.
With thirty children and one hard floor, speech keeps returning off every surface almost as loud as it left the teacher.
Younger children and anyone processing a second language rely more on the direct sound reaching them clearly — reverberation degrades exactly the cue they need most.

BB93 gives around 0.6 to 0.8 seconds for a general teaching space — most untreated classrooms measure well above that.

Will acoustic tiles cost as much as a full refit?
No — like-for-like ceiling grid tiles are one of the cheaper interventions on this list per square metre, which is exactly why ceiling area is usually the first thing to treat.
