Echo isn't a questionnaire that spits out a generic recommendation. It runs the same equations a consultant would reach for first, on the room you actually describe — which is why the report at the end has real numbers on it, not a category.

Describe the room

Length, width, height, and what's on each surface — floor, walls, ceiling. That's it. No plans, no drawings required, though if you have a DXF plan the wizard will read the geometry straight off it. Most people do this standing in the room on a phone, tape measure in the other hand.

Echo runs the physics

The same statistical method an acoustician starts a project with — the Sabine/Eyring family of equations — calculates reverberation time from the room's volume and the absorption of every surface in it. Speech clarity is calculated separately, using IEC 60268-16, the international standard for predicting how intelligible speech will be in a space. Both run in the time it takes to read this sentence.

A single reverberation-time figure and a speech-clarity score, plotted against what a room like this should be — not a guess at what "good" means, but the relevant published guidance for that room type, with the basis for that target named on the report. If the room already meets it, Echo says so plainly instead of finding a problem that isn't there.

Ceiling rafts, wall panels, carpet or underlay, curtains, upholstered seating — each quantified against the actual area it would need in this specific room, each showing the reverberation time it would leave you with. Not one recommendation; five real options, so the decision about budget and appearance stays yours.

Where this stops being enough

Echo is honest about its own limits, on purpose. It's an indicative prediction for deciding what to do at design stage — not a measured survey, and not a substitute for one where a formal, signed-off figure is genuinely required. Where that's the case, that comes from a measurement to BS EN ISO 3382-2, carried out by a qualified acoustician. Most of what Echo gives you is knowing, before that survey is commissioned, whether you actually need one.
