Stone walls, a timber floor, a high ceiling and almost nothing soft in the room. A church hall is close to the worst case for speech, which is why the back three rows give up during announcements and why the AGM takes twice as long as it should.
How you know it is the room
- Announcements are clear at the front and lost at the back
- Two conversations at once and nobody can follow either
- Music sounds enormous; speech sounds like mush
- Everybody raises their voice, which makes it worse
Why it happens
Hard surfaces return almost all the sound energy that hits them, so each word keeps arriving long after it was spoken.
The next word then lands on top of the tail of the last one. That overlap is what destroys intelligibility — it is not a volume problem, which is why shouting does not help.
A hall this size holds a great deal of air, and the more air there is, the longer the energy takes to be absorbed.

Do I have to use acoustic panels?
No. Absorption is absorption — carpet, curtains and upholstered seating all count, and for many halls a combination is cheaper and far less intrusive than panels. We do not sell any of it, which is why we show you all of it.
Will this help with noise from outside?
No, and it matters not to confuse the two. Absorption changes how a room treats sound made inside it. Keeping sound out is insulation — a different job, different products, different survey.
Is the figure you give me a survey?
No. It is an indicative prediction using the same standard method an acoustician starts from, and it is meant for deciding what to do. Where a formal figure is required, a measured survey to BS EN ISO 3382-2 is what confirms it.
