The brief

The volunteer trustees of a Methodist chapel hall — home to a weekly toddler group, a Saturday food bank, and Sunday service — had reached the point where toddler-group leaders and food-bank volunteers couldn't hear each other across the room, and the Sunday reading was regularly lost by the back pews.

The room

Chapel hall, single storey

16 × 10 × 6.5 m, about 1,040 m³ — brick walls, parquet floor, plaster ceiling with exposed roof trusses.

Brick, parquet and a high plaster ceiling put the hall at roughly 1.3 seconds — characterful for a service, but the direct cause of the toddler-group and food-bank complaints during the room's busier weekday use.

The standard, and the target

There's no statutory reverberation limit for a community hall, so the brief was set by what the room needed to do day to day: readable speech at the back for a service, and normal conversation across a room full of prams and folding tables the rest of the week — in practice, something in the 0.8 to 0.9 second range.

The constraint

The trustees were explicit up front: no budget for a contractor lift or scaffolding, and the exposed roof trusses — original to the building and a feature everyone liked — were not to be boxed in under any circumstances. Anything proposed had to be fittable by the volunteer team themselves from a stepladder.

The decision

Everything landed within reach of a stepladder: heavy curtains on a simple track at the two tall side windows, a carpet runner down the central aisle only (kept the rest of the floor clear for the food bank's folding tables), and upholstered seat pads on the stacking chairs replacing bare plastic.

What was specified

Every route considered, vendor-neutral — we don't sell any of it.

The outcome

The three changes brought the hall from roughly 1.3 seconds to around 0.85 — inside the range the brief called for, fitted entirely by volunteers, and without a single fixing anywhere near the trusses.

Questions people ask

Why not fix panels to the brick walls?

It would likely have worked well, but it needed drilling into original masonry and reaching well above stepladder height in places — outside what the trustees' own volunteer team could safely fit themselves, which was the constraint that shaped the whole brief.

Is this a survey or a certificate for the hall's committee minutes?

No — it's an indicative design-stage prediction using the same method the report uses, not a measured survey. It's useful for deciding what to buy, not for a formal compliance record.

Would this suit a hall that does host scaffolding-scale work anyway?

If a lift or scaffold is already on site for another reason, ceiling-level treatment usually gets further for less material — this example is specifically about the routes that work when that access isn't available at all.
