A bookshop that wanted quiet, and got it back

Retail · design target set by the brand's own quiet-browsing brief, not a regulation

The brief

The owner of an independent bookshop, trading from the ground floor of a converted Georgian townhouse, asked for options after noticing customers cutting till-point conversations short — including, awkwardly, book recommendations that touched on personal taste or circumstance — because the room's original high ceilings and bare floorboards carried every word to the far side of the shop.

The room

9 × 5.5 × 3.8 m, about 188 m³ — painted plaster walls (mostly covered by bookshelving), original bare floorboards, plaster ceiling with ceiling rose.

High Georgian ceilings and bare boards put the shop at roughly 1.1 seconds — part of the room's charm for browsing alone, but exactly what carried a quiet till-point conversation the full length of the shop.

The standard, and the target

There's no statutory reverberation limit for a retail unit; the brief set its own target — quiet, unhurried browsing plus a till point where a normal-volume conversation doesn't reach the far wall — worked out at roughly 0.7 to 0.8 seconds.

The constraint

The ceiling rose and cornicing were original features the owner specifically wanted kept visible — a suspended or covered ceiling was ruled out before the brief started, on top of the bare floorboards being original to the building and not for covering either.

The decision

With both the ceiling and floor off the table, the fix came entirely from the walls and freestanding elements: full-height fabric panels on the two stretches of wall not already covered by shelving, plus a low upholstered bench seat near the till that doubled as customer seating and a sound-absorbing surface right where it mattered most.

What was specified

Every route considered, vendor-neutral — we don't sell any of it.

  • Fabric wall panels, uncovered wall sectionsabout 14 m²

    The only bare wall available once shelving is accounted for — sized to what was actually left.

    Doubles as customer seating and as absorption right at the point the complaint was about.

    A smaller contribution — mainly stops stockroom noise leaking onto the shop floor.

The outcome

The panels and bench together brought the shop to roughly 0.75 seconds — inside the range the brief called for — with the ceiling rose, cornicing and original floorboards untouched throughout.

Questions people ask

Why not just add a rug near the till instead of a bench?

A rug was considered and would help a little, but a soft floor covering does much less per square metre than a genuinely absorptive upholstered surface — the bench did more work for a similar footprint, and doubled as seating.

Does covering the walls with shelving already help?

Some — books and shelving are mildly absorptive compared to bare plaster — but nowhere near enough on their own, which is exactly what the remaining bare wall sections were treated for.

Would a bigger bookshop need proportionally more?

Not necessarily in a straight line — a bigger room has more shelving, which is itself doing some of the work, so the treated area doesn't always scale with floor area the way it would in an empty room.
