The benchmark library.
This is the published design target Echo checks every room of a given type against — not a comparison against other users' results. Each figure below is drawn from a named standard or industry guidance document, the same target used to work out every room's result on this site, shown here with its citation rather than buried in a report footer.
A real peer-comparison library — your result against other Studio users' rooms of the same type, anonymised and aggregated — isn't something we can build honestly yet: Studio is still young, and there isn't enough saved-room volume to anonymise and aggregate fairly. That will be added once enough rooms have gone through Studio to make it possible. Everything below is real today.
Targets by room type
Sorted by target reverberation time, shortest first.
Critical listening
ITU-R BS.1116-3 and EBU Tech 3276: Tm = 0.25·(V/100)^(1/3) s, kept within 0.2–0.4 s
Calls and discussion
General good practice (no standard sets a meeting-room value for this country): speech-clarity guidance for small meeting spaces. For reference, several national and rating-system rules sit at 0.6 s or below
Desks, calls, meetings
General good practice (no standard sets an open-plan office value for this country): speech-clarity guidance for open-plan offices. For reference, ISO 22955:2021 sets 0.5 s or less for call, collaboration and focused-work areas
Teaching space
BB93 Table 6 (reverberation): new-build primary classroom ≤0.6 s; secondary ≤0.8 s; refurbishment 0.8 s / 1.0 s
Dining, chatter
General good practice (no standard sets a restaurant value for this country): industry guidance for dining spaces. For reference, UK school guidance holds dining rooms to 1.0 s or below and Spain's building code sets 0.9 s
Entrance, waiting, hard finishes
General good practice (no standard sets a reception-area value for this country): circulation and atrium guidance. For reference, UK school guidance allows foyers and atria up to 1.5 s
Speech and some music
General good practice (no standard sets a value for places of worship or community halls): UK school guidance holds assembly halls to 0.8–1.2 s, and speech-led worship spaces are usually treated similarly
Large, hard surfaces
BB93 Table 7 (school sports hall, by floor area: ≤1.5 s under 280 m², sliding to ≤2.0 s above 530 m²)
No specific preset for this use — using a general circulation/multi-use target of 1.0 s as a starting point (UK school guidance holds libraries and dining rooms to 1.0 s or below). It is indicative only, not taken from a standard; check it against the actual standard you're working to for the real room.
